FAQs

Have questions about bookkeeping, what we do, or how we can help your business succeed? This section provides answers to some of the most common queries we receive. Still have questions?

Can you help during busy periods or just for ongoing support?

Both! We can provide regular ongoing admin support or step in during busy periods, seasonal rushes, or when your usual staff are away. Because we don't have a minimum charge, we can do 10 minutes a month or several hours, depending on what you need at the time!

What kind of admin tasks can you help with?

Pretty much anything administrative your business needs - the only admin task we can't do is full reception. We've handled everything from basic filing and email management to complex creditor negotiations and customer service support. We've even had times when a client's phone has come to us as they have been short-staffed and cannot take calls.

Can you help us get set up with systems or software?

Yes and no, setting up is usually very straightforward; however, it does depend on the system. I have done some conversions, but there are times it is more beneficial to let an expert handle some of them, you have to look at what is most cost-effective for the client.

How often will we meet to discuss our finances?

This depends on your business needs and however often you want. Some people prefer weekly check-ins, while others opt for monthly reviews. We tailor our reporting and meeting schedule to what works best for your business and we're always happy to change depending on your needs!

Can you work with my accountant?

Yes, absolutely! We are more than happy to work with your accountant, and we do so for many of our clients. We can also help you to find an accountant that suits you if you don't have one yet. It is important to have a good relationship with an accountant that works for you.

What industries can TMM Bookkeeping help/support?

Any industry! Between us we have worked in a variety of sectors, so we may already know a bit of what you do. If not we are always keen to learn!

Which software systems do you work with?

We have used many different systems over the years, each system has good and bad features, we currently have clients using Xero, Xero Payroll, Infusion, Mechanic Desk, Fergus, Crystal Payroll and Thankyou Payroll. We also have experience in MYOB Business, including the payroll, and have used many other programmes over the years. We pride ourselves on being able learn new software (and we won't charge a client for learning a system!)

What is the difference between bookkeeping and accounting?

A bookkeeper handles the daily financial tasks, looking at smaller details and transactions, ensuring your financial records are organised, and laying the groundwork for the accountant to come in and do the year-end tax compliance. Your bookkeeper is a lot cheaper than an accountant and will save on your accountant's time by ensuring all the information is at the accountant's fingertips.

Can bookkeeping be done remotely?

Yes absolutely. Tina was working from home two days a week before COVID to care for family, then through COVID she was at home the whole time. Some clients I see weekly, others I will see monthly. As so much is now electronic, you don’t need to be on-site, so time is not wasted on things that a bookkeeper doesn’t need to be involved in. It also saves the company costs, I use my own computers, phone, internet, and power. If a client needs me, I can always jump in the car to see them if it can’t be dealt with over the phone.

Can you help us catch up on overdue bookkeeping?

Yes, it is not unusual for someone to realise they need help and turn up with a box full of receipts, often with no separation between personal and business, this would be very expensive for an accountant to deal with.
